A river runs through this place we call Westbrook, Maine. For over 10,000 years this has been Wabanaki territory and the once vibrant homeland to Chief Polin and his kin. The river, spilling over with migratory Alewive and Salmon, served its people well until Colonel Westbrook saw to damming the river enough to end the lifeblood of the river and its people. Biological warfare circa 1735.
I am a river lover and support their restoration, freedom to flow and their protection.
For more than a quarter of a century the non-profit organization, Friends of the Presumpscot River, have worked passionately to restore and protect the vitality of our small but mighty river. Their efforts have improved water quality, restored migratory fish populations, and increased public awareness of the Presumpscot's economic and recreational potential. The Presumpscot flows from Sebago Lake spilling into Casco Bay.
Pictured left is the Chief Polin Memorial at a celebration of Indigenous Day put on by Friends of the Presumpscot and director Michael Shaughnessy.
I love and support river lovers, caretakers, restorers and have volunteered my photography services to support their efforts in building community education and advocacy for the Presumpscot.
Once putrid, the water quality now is greatly improved where fishing, paddling and swimming are safely available to all forms or waterfowl, birds of prey and humans.
More dams need be made migratory fish-friendly, paddler portage-friendly and habitat-restoration friendly (aka removed). Water quality below the SAPPI mill need be improved as this flows right to the ocean, the fisheries, and those dependent upon it. (all of life).
